Portugal brings some of European’s Cycling Innovation to Sea Otter Classic 2025

Portugal is gearing up to showcase why it’s become a dominant force in the global cycling industry at the Sea Otter Classic 2025. For several years now, Portugal has proudly held the title of Europe’s largest bicycle manufacturer, a testament to its commitment to quality and competitive production.

Since 2015, significant efforts have been invested in empowering Portuguese companies to thrive on the global stage. The sector’s competitiveness is undeniable, built on a reputation for excellent build quality and attractive pricing – a clear demonstration that “we know how to make it.”

But Portugal’s story doesn’t stop there. Over the last three years, the nation’s two-wheeler and soft mobility sector has embarked on a significant strategic shift. It’s successfully transitioning from being primarily the largest manufacturer to becoming a vital hub for research, development, and cutting-edge innovation. This evolution is powered by industries adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, making them more competitive, efficient, quality-driven, and environmentally conscious.

A key catalyst in this transformation is the AM2R project (Mobilizing Agenda for Business Innovation in the Two-Wheeler Sector). Financed by the PRR/Next Generation EU funds, AM2R acts as a powerful accelerator. This ambitious initiative involves a consortium of 44 entities, including leading companies like Polisport, universities, technology centers, and the sector’s representative body, ABIMOTA.

With a planned investment of €213 million, nearly €200 million has already been deployed. The project is over 50% executed, and roughly two-thirds of the participating entities are already integrating or have completed their Industry 4.0 technology upgrades.
